Mashhad is an important city in northeast Iran. Throughout the centuries, it has served as a gateway between the historical Persian empire and a clash point between Iran and its eastern neighbours. It is said that Alexander the Great crossed the land during his incursion to the east (330 Bc) and established a garrison that was later developed into a town where the Mashad stands now. The Mongols brutally conquered the Persian empire (1219BC.) and spread to the west through this city. The turbulent past and the city's strategic importance have translated into a vast diversity of ethnicities and cultures in the Khorasan area, with Mashhad as its capital.
Carpet weaving in the area is a heritage of such ethnic diversity, and it was historically introduced into the area by nomads. The abundance of skilled nomadic weavers who moved to Mashhad and settled in the city paved the ground for establishing great court weaving workshops in the city, which have been responsible for producing some of the finest Persian masterpieces. One of the most famous weavers of Persian carpets, Amoghli, was from the town, and the rugs that were woven under his auspices for the palaces of the Pahlavi Kings are some of the finest in the world.

The majestic classic medallion design of this carpet sits on a detailed coral field. Such elegant medallions symbolize a complete form, self, or a supreme entity. The designer has crafted every other element in the rug to appear in a quest towards such an enigmatic form, thus the flowers in the shape of half blooms incline towards the centre.
It took a period of eight months for two weavers to painstakingly tie 1.8 million strong knots to make this fantastic carpet around the end of the second half of the 20th century.
